Imagine you find yourself amidst ladies and gentlemen. Looking around things are not the way they should be- they’re haywire. To your left a young lady you know drinking from her father’s age mate pot as if that you didn’t see. To your front is your course mate A.  N. Other bleeding from his forehead and rushing out for help. You’re stranded. You begin to recall what you’re Mother told you….

Before any person was conceived there existed guidance.  Delivery all through lactation both involves guidance and counselling. Therefore, there should not exist any assumption of doing away with Guidance and Counselling even though you’re of age. In Kibabii University that I’m proud of being, it’s of Age. Thanks to the Guidance and Counselling Setup. We are taught to know, once we’ve known we teach.

It is not for a person or lecturer to say they are going to counsel a student or a pupil while they are actually going to give a talk on a given topic, such as examination preparation. This misconception arises out from two factors:

  1. Inability to make a distinction between guidance and counselling.
  2. Lack of understanding of what counselling is.

Guidance means: To direct, steer, aid, assist, lead, inform or show the way or Guidance is the process in which a person is able to know their ability, interest and capacity that will help encounter problems faced by them. Guidance is the process of a dynamic interpersonal relationship that is prepared to influence the person’s attitude and follow-up behavior.

Counselling: Refers to consultation, discussion and exchange of ideas or is a  ‘helping process that uses the safety engendered by a special kind of relationship to help individuals to get access to a greater part of their personal resources as a means of responding to challenges of their life

Students are very much focused on academic performances but they never assess themselves because they haven’t explored in Schools, colleges and Universities. They choose or plan their career not assessing self but with the influence of others expertise.  It is quite obvious that if I am a Journalist, definitely I will suggest for Journalism because I have expertise in this field only. Same is applicable for a Teacher, Lawyer, and Veteran. Here, students make mistakes during the selection of streams and career. Due to this reason, self-assessment is very important.

Components of Guidance and Counselling Services in Institutions of Learning

  • Educational Guidance
  • Vocational or Career Guidance
  • Personal, Social And Psychological Guidance

All the above components lead to an umbrella term. That is Decision  Making. Educational counselling facilitates decision making about important aspects of

  • Making choice regarding subjects or courses of study.
  • Making decisions regarding personal matters, interests and corresponding ability and capabilities.
  • Making choices regarding high school, college and university in Kenya and abroad.

Should our learning institutions initiate guidance and counselling as a subject or unit in all fields of study then our learners will do away with the ego of becoming of age. When we look around and hear from the daily news, parents are undergoing sleepless nights, worrying of how their legacy shall stand tomorrow. What might be the reasons: Students are taken to institutions of learning to study but unlearn. Diseases are welcomed hence, incurable. Misappropriation and embezzlement of funds due to lack of guidance.

In a nutshell, institutions of learning, Kibabii University among others should initiate other Programs of Concern in response to Guidance & Counselling Such as;

  1. Inter- school program: this involves guidance and counselling clubs such as peer counselling clubs, peer interacts from various institutions coming together for couching.
  2. Training of Peer Counselor: We all need to understand that peer counselors are not professional counselors and this is not a full time job. They remain students and should only receive basic training to render effectively to their colleagues.
  3. Informal counselling: During leisure times especially at games times, other students seclude themselves from others- they should be attended to by the counselors and not requiring them to report to the office for assistance [automatically, they won’t come]. It is as well advisable that a teacher can practice this before s/he leaves the classroom
  4. Inducting and sensitizing prefects on their roles and Responsibilities: This should be in relation to Guidance and Counselling. This will encourage them to take close guard of their fellow students.
  5. Teacher- parent: A Lecture/teacher is assigned a group of students (usually 4-12) as the parent [father or mother]. S/he meets them once a week. This will also shy off the Lecturers/teachers from seeking relationship to the students.
  6. Students Based Groupings: This may include student mothers/fathers and grandparents. Some care should be exercised in coming up with these groups. Although the idea of father mother is very imperial, older students can bully the younger and seduce them sexually. Teachers/ Lecturers supervision should exist.
  7. Prize Giving day and other special forums: The semester or Term calendar should be revisited for changes by creating such days. Those students that have performed well in examinations, the neat students, those that have changed from evil doing to good will, among others through counselling should be awarded. No wonder, Credit is given to whom it deserves.
